Turning research findings into a narrative object
The aim was to give an especially important research presentation a more memorable form than a simple PowerPoint.
The study was designed to identify the key strengths and main insights across L’Oréal Paris brands, in order to summarise the essential elements to keep in mind when expressing their respective values and strengths.
The team liked the idea of physically unfolding the discovery, creating a progressive reading experience, panel by panel, and had mentioned a form inspired by origami.
MY ROLE
When I took on the project, I began by organising and prioritising the different blocks in order to build a genuine narrative reading sequence.
In doing so, I realised that the different lines could form a loop: once the reader reached the end, they could naturally return to the first block.
That idea of a continuous, virtuous loop stayed with me.
I then explored how to combine the idea of origami with that of perpetual motion. Drawing on my experience in packaging design, I developed a structure that, once assembled, can be turned endlessly on itself.
The concept was presented to the team and was immediately approved.
A READING EXPERIENCE GUIDED BY GESTURE
Because the object itself was almost hypnotic, I deliberately kept the visual treatment very simple in order to refocus the reader’s attention on the information: one block of text per face, organised as a sequence by line.
To access the next line, the reader has to turn the structure inward or outward. As I could not control the direction in which the reader would choose to turn the object, the distribution of the text was crucial, and the content had to remain readable in either direction.
PRODUCTION
Once the principle and design had been approved, I adapted the size of the template to ensure the text remained legible, then sourced and coordinated the different suppliers required for production: finishing, printing, assembly and delivery.
The main challenge came from the production volume: between 50 and 150 units per reference, with an object that could not be glued flat and therefore required manual assembly.
My involvement covered the entire process: conceptual thinking, information structuring, graphic and product design, technical solution sourcing, quotations, schedule coordination, samples and testing, production supervision and final assembly.
RESULT
The project transformed a research presentation into a tactile, playful and memorable reading object, capable of conveying the study in a distinctive way.
The final form did more than simply present the information: it made the ideas of continuity and progression physically perceptible. The looped reading structure, in turn, suggested the idea of a virtuous circle and potentially infinite progression.
